CCC Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain Joins Drain Cleaning in Bakalia; Launches ‘Crash Program’ to Combat Waterlogging
The Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has launched a vigorous “Crash Program” to clear drains and canals, in a direct move to address the city’s long-standing waterlogging crisis. The drive commenced today in the Bakalia area, focusing on removing accumulated silt and waste to ensure smooth water flow ahead of the monsoon season.
CCC Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain personally supervised the operation. In a symbolic gesture to emphasize the importance of public cooperation, the Mayor himself joined the workers in removing waste from the drains.
Speaking to reporters at the site, Mayor Dr. Shahadat expressed concern over waste management challenges. “The City Corporation has already distributed approximately 6,000 dustbins across the city to keep our streets clean,” he stated. “However, it is deeply discouraging to see that many of these bins are being stolen or are not being used correctly. Instead of using the bins, many citizens are still dumping trash directly into the drainage system.”
The Mayor warned that legal action would be taken against those involved in the theft of public property and emphasized that awareness campaigns would be intensified. He urged residents to stop disposing of polythene and plastic waste in the drains, as these are the primary causes of blockages.
Senior officials from the CCC’s engineering and waste management departments were present during the drive. According to CCC sources, this “Crash Program” will be expanded to other critical areas of the city in the coming days to minimize the risk of urban flooding during heavy rainfall.
