Youth Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Raping a Child in Chattogram

A Chattogram court sentenced a 24-year-old man, identified as Md. Aktar Sardar, to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of raping a 10-year-old child in the Sadarghat area of the city. Judge Syeda Hafsa Jhuma of the Chattogram Metropolitan Child Violence Suppression Tribunal delivered the verdict on Sunday (July 26, 2026). The convict hails from the Kukraparshi area under Jamalganj Upazila in Sunamganj district.

According to the case details, the victim was a fourth-grade student at the time of the incident, and both of her parents worked as day laborers. Taking advantage of being a neighbor, Aktar frequently visited their home and enticed the girl with various small gifts. On the afternoon of July 2, 2022, finding the child alone at home, Aktar forcibly raped her and threatened to kill her if she disclosed the incident to anyone. Out of fear, the child remained silent until July 6, when her health deteriorated, prompting her mother to uncover the ordeal. She was subsequently admitted to the One-Stop Crisis Center (OCC) at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for treatment.

Following the incident, the victim’s father filed a case with the Sadarghat Police Station. Police completed their investigation and submitted a charge sheet to the court on November 21, 2023, with the trial formally commencing on April 15, 2024. Tribunal Public Prosecutor (PP) Mahmud-ul Alam Chowdhury Maruf confirmed that following extensive hearings and witness testimonies, the court found the allegations proven beyond doubt. Alongside the life sentence, the tribunal fined the convict Tk 20,000, in default of which he will have to serve an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment. As the convict was present in court during the verdict announcement, he was dispatched to prison under a conviction warrant.
