Cox’s Bazar minibus-autorickshaw collision kills driver

A driver was killed in a head-on collision between a minibus and a CNG-powered autorickshaw in the Dargah Para area of ​​Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila. The accident occurred at Jhilanja Union on the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway at around 4 pm on Friday (December 26).

The deceased driver has been identified as Mohammad Sohel (23). He is the son of Abdur Shukkur of Machuakhali area of ​​PMkhali Union of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila.

According to local residents and police sources, Sohel was heading towards Cox’s Bazar town in the afternoon with his autorickshaw. When he reached the Dargah Para area of ​​Jhilanja Union, the autorickshaw collided head-on with a speeding minibus coming from the opposite direction. The autorickshaw was twisted and the driver Sohel was seriously injured.

After the accident, locals quickly rescued him and took him to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital, where the doctor on duty at the emergency department declared him dead. The driver and his assistant fled the scene after the accident, abandoning the minibus.

Cox’s Bazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Chamiuddin said that there were no passengers in the autorickshaw except the driver at the time of the accident. On receiving the information, a team of highway police went to the spot and seized the minibus and autorickshaw that had been involved in the accident.

He also said that the body of the deceased Sohel has been kept at the Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. Efforts are underway to identify the absconding bus driver and assistant.
