Unidentified gunmen have killed 10 people and injured another 10 in a shooting on the outskirts of Johannesburg, South Africa, police said on Sunday. It is the second major gun attack in the country this month.
Police said the attack took place in Bakersdale township, about 40 kilometres southwest of Johannesburg. The motive for the attack is not yet clear.
A police statement said, “Unidentified gunmen opened fire indiscriminately on the street, causing casualties.”
Gauteng provincial police spokeswoman Brigadier Brenda Muridili said 10 people were killed. The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed. The injured were rushed to hospital, police said.
According to police, the shooting took place near a tavern or unlicensed pub in Bakersdale. The area is poor and is close to some of South Africa’s largest gold mines.
On December 6, gunmen killed 12 people, including a three-year-old child, in a hostel attack near the capital, Pretoria.
Police said the incident in Bakersdale took place at a place where illegal alcohol was being sold.
South Africa, a country of 63 million people, has a high crime rate. It has long been known for having one of the highest murder rates in the world.
