Maduro would be wise to step down: Trump

It would be “wise” for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to step down, US President Donald Trump said.

He made the comments while speaking to reporters at Mar-a-Lago, Florida, on Monday.

At the time, he hinted that the US could keep or sell the oil from tankers seized off the coast of Venezuela if it wanted.

Reuters wrote that the Trump administration has increased its military presence in the region as part of putting pressure on Maduro.

In addition, US forces have carried out at least 26 military attacks on various vessels accused of drug trafficking in the Pacific and Caribbean Seas. At least 100 people have been killed in these attacks so far.

In response to reporters’ questions about the current situation in Venezuela, Trump said, “I think it would be wise for him to do it (step down). But what he does is up to him. We’ll see what happens in the end.”

He warned again, “If he tries to get tough, that will be his last chance to get tough.”

Trump harshly criticized Colombian President Gustavo Petro at the press conference. Petro, known as an ally of Maduro, had recently criticized Trump’s policy on Venezuela. In response, Trump said, “He is not a friend of the United States. He is a very bad man. He should look at himself, because he makes cocaine and sends it to the United States.”

Trump last week announced a “blockade” on oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela.

The US Coast Guard began chasing another oil tanker in international waters on Sunday. If successful, it would be the third operation in the past two weeks and the second this week.

Regarding the seized oil, Trump said, “Maybe we will sell it or keep it to increase our strategic reserves.”

Without directly responding to Trump’s remarks, Maduro said that every leader should look at the internal affairs of his country.

“If I speak to him again, I will tell him that each country should focus on its own internal affairs,” Maduro said, referring to a phone call between the two leaders last month.
