Winning all five matches in the qualifying round without conceding a goal. All in all, a new record for an unbeaten run. A ticket to the World Cup is also practically confirmed. Spain will be among the favorites for next year’s tournament. Despite the team’s difficult journey, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente is keeping his feet on the ground.
Spain rewrote their own record by defeating Georgia 4-0 on their home ground last Saturday.
De la Fuente’s team is unbeaten in 30 consecutive matches in competitive football. They were unbeaten in 29 consecutive matches between 2010 and 2013 under the coaching of Vicente del Bosque.
This excellent journey includes winning the European Championship last year, winning all seven matches in that tournament held in Germany.
Spain is at the top of Group ‘E’ in the European World Cup qualifiers with 15 points. They scored 19 goals in five wins and kept the net intact.
Turkey is second with 12 points. A win or a draw against Turkey at home on Tuesday, or even a loss by less than 7 goals, will see Spain top the group and automatically qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The Spanish won the first match of the two teams 6-0.
Speaking to the media on Monday ahead of the upcoming match in Seville, De la Fuente admitted that the pressure of being the favourites for the World Cup is on them, saying that their main goal is to do their job well.
Success is having the opportunity to fight for victory. There is a very fine line between victory and defeat. There are no clear favourites in the World Cup. Before football, the focus was on other teams, but now Spain is among the favourites.”
Despite being on the verge of a World Cup ticket, De la Fuente insisted that they will not go for any test against Turkey.
“We are taking this match very seriously, for the sake of dignity, to show what we have achieved. We want to be number one in the world.”
