The death toll from a powerful cyclone in Sri Lanka has risen to 618, authorities said on Sunday (December 7).
Tropical storms and monsoon rains have triggered landslides and floods in Southeast and South Asia in recent days.
At least 1,812 people have died in natural disasters in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam in the past two weeks, according to the report.
Meanwhile, Indonesia’s president pledged to increase aid on Sunday, while many protested after the death toll in the country passed 900.
More than two million people were affected by floods and landslides caused by Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka last week, the deadliest cyclone in a century.
Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) said that more rains are expected to be caused by the monsoon, which could affect mountainous areas.
Meanwhile, helicopters and planes were used to provide aid to communities isolated by landslides in the centre of the country on Sunday.
The Sri Lankan Air Force said it had received a planeload of relief supplies from Myanmar on Sunday, the latest in a series of foreign aid deliveries.
It added that more than 75,000 homes had been damaged in the natural disaster, of which about 5,000 were completely destroyed.
