Trump-Netanyahu to meet in Florida on second phase of Gaza ceasefire

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is visiting the United States to discuss the implementation of the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire.

The two leaders are scheduled to meet on Monday at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Netanyahu said earlier this month that Trump had invited him for talks.

The meeting is set to take place amid US pressure on Israel to implement the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire, which has been indifferent to the establishment of an interim government and the deployment of international forces.

Netanyahu had said on December 22 that the topics of the meeting would be the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire and the issues of Iran and Lebanon.

The US had brokered ceasefires with Israel in three areas – Gaza, Iran and Lebanon. However, Israel is concerned that its enemies, weakened by the war, are regrouping.

The ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian liberation group Hamas in Gaza was reached last October. The ceasefire was in accordance with US President Donald Trump’s peace plan.

According to the plan, the Israeli army will withdraw from Gaza in stages, Hamas will be disarmed and a government will be established in Gaza.

The first phase of the ceasefire agreement saw a partial withdrawal of Israeli troops, increased aid supplies to Gaza and an exchange of Palestinian prisoners held by Hamas.

An Israeli official close to Netanyahu said that Netanyahu will demand that Hamas complete the first phase of the ceasefire in Gaza by returning the bodies of the last Israeli hostages. He will then discuss the next phase.

This will be Netanyahu’s fifth meeting with Trump in the United States this year. Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth reported that the meeting could include sensitive issues in the Middle East, including Gaza.

In addition to Iran, these include a possible Israel-Syria security agreement and the ceasefire situation with Hezbollah in Lebanon. This meeting between Trump and Netanyahu is seen as an important turning point for moving to the next phase of the ceasefire in Gaza.

Last week, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the Trump administration’s top priority is: completing the first phase of the ceasefire in Gaza and moving to a phase of long-term governance, stability and reconstruction.

However, Israel continues to violate the ceasefire in Gaza. At least six Palestinians were killed in a recent attack.
