Addressing a seminar at Feni University today (06 May, 2026), Mohammad Abdul Hamid, Assistant Director of the Feni Narcotics Control Department, called for a collective social movement to eradicate the “social disease” of drug addiction.
Speaking as the keynote speaker under the theme “Hold Pens, Quit Addiction; Build a Drug-Free Society,” Hamid emphasized that while the Department of Narcotics Control conducts daily raids and arrests, legal enforcement alone cannot solve the crisis. He urged citizens from all walks of life to work together through awareness and cooperation, stating that the rising number of addicts requires a shift in focus toward social resistance rather than just police operations.
During the session, Hamid specifically highlighted the role of families and students in prevention. He noted that addiction often begins with gateway habits like cigarettes, betel leaves, and smokeless tobacco (jarda), eventually leading to harder drugs like cannabis. He urged students to take a stand within their own homes, identifying and guiding family members away from these habits. Prosecutor Nur Mohammad also shared sobering statistics, noting that there are currently 9 million drug-addicted individuals across the country, making daily enforcement increasingly difficult as the number grows.
The seminar was organized by the Feni District Department of Narcotics Control and chaired by Muhammad Afsar Uddin, Chairman of the CSE Department at Feni University. Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Abul Kashem attended as the Chief Guest, while student Tauhidur Zaman Simon moderated the event. Following a welcoming address by Prosecutor Nur Mohammad, the seminar concluded with a quiz competition where guests presented awards to five student winners.
