Government Cracks Down on Illegal Hoarding and Appoints Tag Officers

The Energy and Mineral Resources Division has officially confirmed that there is no risk of a fuel shortage in the country, urging citizens to remain calm and avoid panic-buying.

In a press release issued on Saturday (March 28), the department clarified that the supply of petrol, octane, and diesel remains completely normal and steady.

The government warned that hoarding these highly flammable substances is not only illegal but also extremely dangerous. To combat artificial crises and price manipulation, executive magistrates are now leading mobile courts across all districts to take strict legal action against illegal stockpiling. The Ministry emphasized that the government has not increased fuel prices and continues to import sufficient stock from the international market to ensure an uninterrupted supply chain.

In a significant move to enhance monitoring, the Energy Division has decided to appoint a “Tag Officer” for every single petrol pump across the nation. In the Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas, these officers will be appointed by the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC). In other districts and upazilas, Deputy Commissioners (DC) and Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNO) will designate government officials to oversee pump operations.

These Tag Officers are mandated to monitor sales and submit daily reports to the BPC to prevent any irregularities or artificial shortages at the retail level.
