Counterfeit Money Peddler Detained and Jailed in Feni’s Fulgazi

Feni Correspondent

Police have arrested a man named Mehedi Hasan (34) while he was attempting to purchase goods with counterfeit banknotes at Amjadhat Bazar in Fulgazi Upazila, Feni. Two fake notes of 1,000 Taka denomination were recovered from his possession.

The arrestee, Mehedi Hasan, is the son of Abdur Rahman, hailing from the Banshbunia area of Kathalia Police Station in Jhalakathi district. Following the filing of a formal case, he was sent to jail this afternoon (May 12).

According to Fulgazi Police sources, Mehedi Hasan and his associate, Roni, had been loitering in the Amjadhat area since Monday (May 11) afternoon. After dusk, Mehedi visited “Mazar Ullah Electric and Hardware” on the Amjadhat Kitchen Market road to buy a small torchlight. He handed over a 1,000 Taka note to pay for the item.

The shopkeeper grew suspicious of the note’s texture and immediately alerted the police. Upon receiving the news, a team from Fulgazi Police Station rushed to the spot and detained Mehedi. During a subsequent search in the presence of witnesses, another counterfeit 1,000 Taka note was found on him. However, his accomplice Roni managed to flee the scene.

Abul Kashem, a local resident, reported that the detained individual had attempted to circulate two different types of fake 1,000 Taka notes—one featuring the older portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and another with the newer print design. Both were confirmed to be counterfeit.

During primary interrogation, Mehedi Hasan confessed to being a professional counterfeit currency dealer. Police records revealed that he is a habitual offender with three existing cases related to counterfeit money and one drug-related case filed at various police stations in Dhaka.

Confirming the matter, S.M. Mizanur Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Fulgazi Police Station, stated that a case has been registered against the accused, and he has been produced before the court and subsequently sent to jail today.
