Sitakunda Correspondent

A devastating fire gutted at least 40 small and medium commercial establishments at the Kadamsurul kitchen market in Sitakunda Upazila on Wednesday morning (September 9, 2026). Affected traders claim that the blaze resulted in estimated financial losses of nearly Tk 1 crore.

According to local sources, the fire suddenly broke out at a shop in the market during the morning hours and rapidly spread to adjacent businesses. Upon receiving the report, two firefighting units from Kumira Fire Service rushed to the scene and brought the inferno under control with the assistance of local residents. However, a major portion of the market, along with stored goods, was completely reduced to ashes before the firefighters arrived.

Confirming the incident, Senior Station Officer of Kumira Fire Service Abdullah Al Mamun stated, “As soon as we received news of the fire at Kadamsurul market, two of our units proceeded to the spot and extinguished the flames. Preliminary findings suggest that the fire originated from an electrical short circuit. The exact extent of the damage will be determined following a formal investigation.”

The sudden blaze has left numerous small and medium traders financially devastated, prompting urgent appeals to the government for immediate financial assistance and rehabilitation support.
