Iran claims to have downed US fighter jet

One crew member from a US F-15 fighter jet downed in Southern Iran has been rescued.

The F-15 jet was shot down in southern Iran early afternoon local time on Friday.

It is the first such known incident of a US fighter jet being shot down over Iran during the five-week war of US and Israel with the country.

A search and rescue effort was under way for the downed fighter jet though the fate of the second crew member, a weapon systems officer is still unknown.

Iran’s state media claimed that Iranian forces had shot down the plane.

Two other American aircrafts including an A-10 Warthog and a helicopter came under fire while trying to rescue the F-15 pilots.

The pilot of the A-10 ejected himself over the Gulf where he was rescued.

The crew members on board of a helicopter carrying a recovered pilot were injured when it was hit by small arms fire. The helicopter landed safely and the personnel are being treated.

Iranian media said, local residents were firing at U.S. helicopters which were on a search-and-rescue mission after the downing of two-seat F-15E fighter jet.

Citing the Iranian Army, Iran’s state TV reported that “an American A10 aircraft was shot by the defence systems of the Army Air Defence Force and crashed in the Persian Gulf in southern Iran”.

Despite claims by U.S. President Donald Trump and his Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth that their forces had complete control of the Iranian sky, the incident of downing the jet demonstrated the risks still faced by American and Israeli aircrafts over Iran.
