Nandighosa – The Chariot of Lord Jagannath
The tallest and most magnificent of the three, Nandighosa carries Lord Jagannath. Lord Balabhadra’s chariot, Taladhwaja, symbolizes strength, courage and righteousness. Key Features: Height: 43 to 44 feet Wheels: 14 Flag: Unnani Charioteer: Matali Horses: Four black horses The chariot is draped in green and red cloth, reflecting Balabhadra’s protective nature and agricultural heritage.
Darpadalana (Devadalana) – The Chariot of Goddess Subhadra
The smallest yet equally revered chariot belongs to Goddess Subhadra. Key Features: Height: 42 to 43 feet Wheels: 12 Flag: Nadambika Charioteer: Arjuna Horses: Four reddish horses Covered in elegant black and red cloth, Darpadalana symbolizes humility, devotion and the triumph over ego.
Why Are New Chariots Built Every Year?
Unlike many religious processions that reuse ceremonial vehicles, the Rath Yatra follows a unique tradition. Fresh chariots are handcrafted annually using specially selected sacred wood. Construction begins on Akshaya Tritiya, with every measurement, carving and decoration performed according to ancient temple scriptures and rituals.
The Journey from Jagannath Temple to Gundicha Temple
During the festival, the three deities leave the sanctum of the Jagannath Temple and travel nearly 3 kilometers along Puri’s famous Bada Danda (Grand Road) to the Gundicha Temple. The return journey, known as Bahuda Yatra, concludes with important rituals including Suna Besha, after the chariots of the deities return to the main temple from the Gundicha temple, the deities are attired in gold ornaments and worshipped on the chariots
