Dhaka North City Corporation has launched a campaign to control mosquitoes and prevent dengue ahead of the monsoon season, says DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan.
“The Prime Minister has instructed that special mosquito control drives be conducted every Saturday,” DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan said today (March 13) in Dhaka while announcing the campaign.
According to a press release, the campaign titled “Saturday’s Pledge – Let’s Keep Our Homes Clean” will begin tomorrow to reduce mosquito breeding and prevent dengue in the city.
The campaign will be carried out jointly by DNCC’s Health and Waste Management Departments with the participation of entomologists and senior mosquito-control officials.
Activities will include removing abandoned containers that can become breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes, cleaning garbage and waste, organizing rallies, distributing leaflets, and spreading public awareness messages.
Shafiqul Islam Khan said the campaign aims to encourage residents to keep their homes and surroundings clean and to actively destroy potential Aedes mosquito breeding sites.
According to surveys conducted by the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research and the Directorate General of Health Services, 25 wards under DNCC have been identified as highly vulnerable to Aedes mosquitoes.
In these wards, a total of 53 campaigns will be conducted under the initiative from March to May every Saturday between 8 am and 12 noon.
Officials said DNCC has started the programme earlier this year to destroy mosquito breeding sites and control dengue before the monsoon season begins.
