Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Dr. Shahadat Hossain stated that alongside government initiatives, civic awareness, responsibility and active participation from every citizen serve as the main driving forces toward building a clean, dengue-free, green and aesthetic Chattogram. Emphasizing that cleanliness is a daily lifestyle habit rather than a one-off program, he urged residents to develop the habit of cleaning their houses, rooftops, yards and surrounding areas every Saturday, starting this culture of hygiene within families and schools.
He delivered these remarks as the chief guest on Saturday morning, July 25, following the inauguration of a colorful procession organized by the Chattogram District Administration aimed at launching a cleanliness drive and boosting public awareness under the theme “Clean City and Village, Build an Aesthetic Chattogram; Clean City, Green City, Cheerful Mind, Healthy Life.”
Following the inauguration, participants wearing matching banners, t-shirts and caps brought out a promotional procession that commenced from the Chattogram Circuit House, traversed Kazi Deuri, Navy Crossing, Officers’ Club and the Radisson Blu Intersection, before returning to the Circuit House. Addressing the gathering, Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain noted that positive societal changes begin with individuals and families, emphasizing that a clean and healthy city can be easily realized if citizens dedicate at least one day a week to cleaning their immediate environment. He added that civic authorities alone cannot keep the city clean without a collective effort from all walks of life.
Speaking as a special guest, Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Dr. Md. Ziauddin highlighted that mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue pose a major challenge to public health, requiring widespread public consciousness to complement government actions. He urged everyone to ensure that no stagnant water accumulates around homes or workplaces, as stagnant water serves as the breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes. Emphasizing that dengue prevention mandates regular cleaning and coordinated action, he called upon all public and private institutions, social organizations and citizens to sustain these activities as an ongoing routine rather than limiting them to a single day.
Presided over by Chattogram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Jahidul Islam Miah, the event was attended by key special guests including Divisional Commissioner Dr. Md. Ziauddin, Chattogram Range DIG of Police Md. Moniruzzaman, CMP Commissioner Hasan Md. Shawkat Ali, District Superintendent of Police Md. Masud Alam and District Civil Surgeon Dr. Jahangir Alam, among others. Officials and employees from various government offices, educational institutions and agencies joined the rally and simultaneously conducted cleaning drives across their respective premises—focusing on clearing rooftops, drains, gardens, water reservoirs and unused spaces to destroy potential mosquito breeding spots.
Additionally, a separate cleaning campaign and awareness procession were organized at 11:00 AM at the Court Hill premises by the Divisional Commissioner’s Office, where top administration officials—including Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, Divisional Commissioner Dr. Md. Ziauddin and Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Jahidul Islam Miah—personally participated in cleaning the office yards and rooftops.
