A massive tree-planting campaign has been launched across 150 government primary schools in Sandwip Upazila, Chattogram, as part of a nationwide green initiative aiming to promote environmental conservation and greening. Under this eco-friendly program, various fruit-bearing, timber-yielding and medicinal saplings are being planted on the premises of each participating educational institution.
The campaign was formally inaugurated on Wednesday, July 15, by Sandwip Upazila Nirbahi Officer Amjad Hossain, who planted a sapling on the grounds of the Thana Unnayan Government Primary School. Upazila Education Officer Mahmudul Haq, along with local school teachers and relevant officials, attended the inauguration ceremony to support the green movement.
According to the organizers, the simultaneous drive across the upazila’s primary schools was designed to maintain ecological balance, instill a deep love for nature among young students, and encourage broader community greening activities. They emphasized that involving children in environmental care helps nurture a sustainable mindset for the next generation.
This local initiative follows the national launch of the drive earlier in the morning in the capital. Prime Minister Tariq Rahman officially inaugurated the nationwide primary school tree-planting campaign during the “Primary Education Medal-2026” ceremony, which was organized by the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in Agargaon, Dhaka.
