Police have detained a 60-year-old man, identified as Md. Rezaul Karim, for attempting to solicit Tk 1 lakh from Ramgarh Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNIO) Kazi Shamim by falsely claiming to be the elder brother of a Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration.

The incident occurred at around 12:00 PM on Tuesday (September 22, 2026) inside the UNO office in Ramgarh. The detainee, son of M. A. Khalek hailing from Chandina Upazila in Cumilla, currently resides in Mirpur, Dhaka, according to his National Identity Card details.

According to UNO Kazi Shamim, the suspect had initially called him two days prior, impersonating the senior official’s sibling. On Tuesday morning, Rezaul called again to inform that he was in Ramgarh, prompting the UNO to invite him to his office.

During the meeting, after being served refreshments, the suspect initiated a conversation regarding the UNO’s job transfer before claiming to be short on funds and requesting a loan of Tk 1 lakh, promising to repay it upon returning to Dhaka.

Suspicious of his demeanor and pitch, UNO Kazi Shamim contacted the Secretary directly, who could not verify the man’s identity. Further inquiries revealed that Rezaul had checked into a local residential hotel using the name and reference of the Ramgarh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC). However, the OC confirmed he had no prior acquaintance with the individual. Following these revelations, the suspect was handed over to law enforcement.

Ramgarh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Nazir Alam confirmed that Rezaul Karim remains in police custody and stated that legal action will be initiated against him based on the formal complaint submitted by the UNO office.
